Session Replay: What Your Analytics Cannot Tell You
Analytics shows you that people leave. It never shows you why. Watching real sessions does, and it is the cheapest research you will ever run.
Your analytics can tell you that half the people on your checkout page leave without buying. It cannot tell you that they leave because the discount code field looks like it is required, or because the shipping cost only appears at the last step. For that, you have to watch.
Session replay records real visits, so you can see the site the way your customers actually experience it. Heatmaps show you where attention pools and where it never reaches. Together they turn "people drop off here" into "people drop off here because of this."
Numbers show the leak, not the cause
A funnel report is a set of walls with holes in them. It is precise about where people fall out and silent about why. Watching ten real sessions of people trying to buy will teach you more about those holes than another week of staring at the percentages.
This is the cheapest research in conversion work. No recruiting, no incentives, no scheduling. Just your actual visitors, doing the actual task.

What to look for when you watch
You are not watching for entertainment. You are watching for friction. A few patterns show up again and again:
- Rage clicks. Someone clicking the same thing over and over, usually because it looks clickable and is not, or it is slow.
- Dead clicks. Clicks that do nothing. Often an image or label people expect to be a link.
- Form abandonment. People reaching a form, starting it, and giving up. Watch which field they stall on.
- Scroll that stops early. Key content sitting below the point where most people ever reach.
Each of these is a fix hiding in plain sight.
Start free, then decide if you need more
You do not need to spend anything to begin. Microsoft Clarity is free, records sessions, and gives you heatmaps. It is more than enough to find your first handful of problems.
If you outgrow it, tools like Hotjar add surveys and feedback on top of replay, and FullStory goes deeper on analysis for larger sites. Pick based on what you actually need next, not on the longest feature list.
Respect privacy while you watch. Session tools should mask what people type in sensitive fields, and you should honour consent. Turn on input masking, keep it compliant with your privacy rules, and never record anything you would not want recorded about yourself.
The habit that pays off is small and regular. Once a week, watch a few sessions of people doing the thing that matters most on your site. You will never run out of things to fix, and they will be the right things.

The E-Commerce Checklist That Actually Moves Sales
A store rarely loses sales because it looks wrong. It loses them to friction, doubt, and slow pages. Here is what to check, in the order it costs you money.
Metrics that Matter: Choosing KPIs That Change a Decision
Most marketing reports track everything and decide nothing. The skill is not measuring more. It is choosing the few numbers that change what you do next.
