Google expands AI Mode ads: what small businesses should check

Google's AI Mode ad expansion opens new placements across 10 markets, but advertisers need to assess eligibility, measurement limits and profitability before changing budgets.

On October 28, 2026, Google announced that ads in AI Mode were expanding to 10 additional countries and introduced ads in follow-up AI Mode questions in the United States. For small businesses, this changes where eligible existing Google Ads campaigns may appear, but it does not provide a separate, guaranteed source of sales.

Google says advertisers do not need to create a dedicated AI Mode campaign. The commercial question is whether these placements generate profitable customers and whether your existing measurement can distinguish useful demand from additional advertising cost.

What changed in Google AI Mode advertising?

Google's October 28 announcement named Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore as markets where ads in AI Mode are expanding. The company also said it planned to expand into additional places, including Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom, during the fourth quarter of 2026. That timetable is a plan, not confirmation that ads already serve in those three countries.

In the United States, Google is introducing multiturn ads. These can appear in responses to follow-up questions within an ongoing AI Mode conversation. Google's advertising documentation describes ads as clearly labelled Sponsored placements within or alongside AI-powered answers.

This is a rollout in Google's search advertising inventory. It does not mean that all users, advertisers, campaign types or queries in a newly named market will immediately see an ad.

What are ads in AI Mode?

Ads in AI Mode are paid placements that can appear while people explore products, services and questions through Google's conversational search experience. Google may match an eligible advertisement to the commercial meaning of a query or follow-up question, including questions that are more exploratory than a conventional keyword search.

Google's official help page distinguishes AI Mode from AI Overviews. AI Overviews are generated summaries appearing within regular search results. AI Mode supports a longer exchange in which someone can refine a question and compare options. Both can include advertisements, but they are not the same interface or advertising placement.

Paid participation does not determine which businesses Google's organic AI responses recommend. Google states explicitly that advertising does not influence the organic answers.

Which countries and campaigns are eligible?

Google's October 28 announcement names 10 markets in the current expansion:

  • Americas: Canada.
  • Africa: Kenya and Nigeria.
  • Asia-Pacific: Australia, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore.

Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom were announced as planned expansions for Q4 2026. The United States already had AI Mode advertising and is the launch market for ads in follow-up questions.

Google's current eligibility documentation lists English as the supported language for ads within AI Mode and AI Overviews in the named markets. It also identifies a limitation for Pakistan: text ads only. Country availability and actual campaign eligibility should be checked in the advertiser's account because Google continues testing placements.

Do you need a new campaign?

No. Google says eligible existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can participate automatically when their ads qualify for an AI-powered search auction. Advertisers do not need a separate AI Mode budget or campaign.

Google's documentation says standard negative keywords and brand exclusions continue to apply. However, that does not provide an advertiser with precise control over every AI Mode conversation in which an ad may be considered. Avoid assuming that a familiar Search campaign setup gives you a separate AI Mode targeting switch.

How is AI Mode advertising billed?

Google says the same auction rules and cost-per-click or conversion-based bidding models apply. There is no extra participation fee simply for appearing in AI Mode. You still incur normal advertising costs when the campaign's applicable charging event occurs.

That makes the budget question familiar: do the conversions and their value justify the spend? The new placement does not change the underlying economics of customer acquisition.

What do multiturn ads change for small businesses?

Imagine a prospective customer asking Google for comfortable walking shoes, then following up with a question about fit, durability or suitability for wet weather. A relevant paid placement may now appear later in that sequence rather than only near the first answer.

For a business owner, that could create opportunities to reach people when their requirements become clearer. It also places more pressure on the accuracy of product information, landing pages and the offer presented in an advertisement.

Google has described these formats as part of an evolving test and rollout. Being eligible for the auction does not guarantee an impression in a particular conversation, and appearing in one does not prove the person was ready to buy.

What should retailers and service businesses check?

The first priority is to ensure the information Google can use is accurate. Google describes matching advertisements to the meaning of searches and AI-powered responses, so the business's product, service and landing-page information should agree.

Illustration for Google expands AI Mode ads: what small businesses should check

For an ecommerce business, check:

  • Product availability: Merchant Center data should reflect stock and purchasable variants.
  • Prices and delivery: Feed information should match the landing page and checkout experience.
  • Product details: Descriptions should answer meaningful comparison questions without unsupported claims.
  • Purchase measurement: Confirm that conversions represent completed orders and do not duplicate transactions.

For a service business, focus on:

  • Offer clarity: Say whom the service is for and what a prospective customer can expect.
  • Geographic fit: Confirm campaigns serve locations where the business actually operates.
  • Lead quality: Assess qualified opportunities and eventual customers, not only form fills.
  • Follow-up: Verify that enquiries reach the right team and receive a response.

Can you measure AI Mode ads separately?

This is a meaningful limitation. Google's AI-powered Search ads documentation says results are included in existing campaign and search-term reporting, rather than providing a standalone AI Mode campaign type.

Do not claim a separate AI Mode ROAS from an ordinary campaign report unless the data source genuinely isolates those placements. Changes in clicks, conversions or CPA after the rollout can also reflect budget changes, seasonality or normal auction variation.

Google has reported similar click-through rates for sponsored and organic product listing items within AI Mode. That comparison comes from Google's internal research, according to its October 28 statement. It does not establish a general click-through benchmark, conversion rate, profitability or incremental lift for a particular advertiser.

A practical measurement approach

Before making major campaign changes, record the current business results and any material account settings. Then monitor the same outcomes as the rollout continues:

  • Cost and volume: Spend, clicks and completed conversions.
  • Commercial quality: Qualified leads, confirmed purchases and contribution after variable costs.
  • Search relevance: Search terms and emerging categories of customer questions where reporting provides visibility.
  • Changes in the account: Budgets, bidding, feeds, landing pages and conversion definitions.

Consider a hypothetical retailer with a $60 contribution per extra order after product and fulfilment costs. Ten additional orders would create $600 in contribution before advertising. If the extra advertising needed to win those orders cost $700, the retailer would be worse off by $100. This is a hypothetical illustration, not a forecast of AI Mode performance.

The useful outcome is additional profitable demand, not exposure to a new search interface.

Should you change budgets or bidding now?

The expansion alone is not a sufficient reason to increase spend, switch to broad targeting or rebuild campaigns. Google already makes eligible inventory available through existing campaigns, and the official announcement does not establish that AI Mode is more profitable than conventional Search for a given small business.

First, audit your current conversion signals and landing pages. If the account is already struggling with inaccurate purchase values, poor lead qualification or irrelevant traffic, address those issues before allocating more budget.

Google's AI-powered advertising guidance also makes a distinction between paid ads and organic AI responses. Businesses seeking citations or recommendations in unpaid AI search results need a separate content and visibility strategy. Our AI search visibility measurement guide covers the difference between visibility signals and commercial results.

What should small businesses do this week?

Treat the October 28 change as an eligibility and measurement check rather than an instruction to launch something immediately.

  1. Confirm whether the business targets one of the announced markets and whether the relevant experience is available in English.
  2. Review existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max settings and the accuracy of campaign assets.
  3. Reconcile reported conversions with orders, qualified leads and customer records.
  4. Record baseline cost and commercial outcomes before making unrelated changes.
  5. Monitor Google's documentation as its country support and AI Mode formats evolve.

ConversionNest's view: The opportunity is to reach commercially relevant questions as search becomes more conversational. A useful advertising decision still needs accurate measurement, a credible offer and evidence that added demand contributes to profit.

Frequently asked questions

Can small businesses advertise in Google AI Mode?

Yes, eligible existing Google Ads Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns may serve ads in AI Mode where supported. Availability depends on the market, language, query and auction.

Is AI Mode advertising available in the United Kingdom?

On October 28, 2026, Google said the United Kingdom was planned for expansion during Q4 2026. That announcement is not confirmation of live availability on every account.

Do Google AI Mode ads cost more?

Google says there is no separate participation fee and existing auction and bidding models apply. Actual costs depend on your campaigns and the auctions they enter.

Do Google AI Mode ads improve organic AI recommendations?

No. Google states that paid advertisements do not influence the organic responses generated by its AI search experiences.

Can I see AI Mode ad ROAS in a separate report?

Google currently describes AI-powered search ad results as part of standard campaign reporting. Do not interpret aggregate campaign ROAS as an isolated AI Mode result.
