What are review summaries in Google Search ads?
What your customers write about you online can now appear in your Google Search ads, in words chosen by Google.

Review summaries in Google Search ads are short, AI-generated lines that condense positive online reviews of your business and show them inside your ad. Google writes them from reviews it finds across the web, shows them only when it predicts a performance gain, and does not let advertisers edit the text. As of October 28, 2026 they run in English in the US, UK, Australia and India.
The limitation that matters most: Google's documentation describes no opt-out and no reporting for the feature. For growth teams, the commercial question is what your customers already say about you, because that is now part of your ad copy whether you planned it or not.
How review summaries work
Google's help page, About Review summaries, says Google AI aggregates reviews from across the web and turns them into short commentary within Search ads. The summaries are positive only. Google says it applies grounding standards to keep the text tied to real reviews, but it does not name the review sources, a minimum review count or a recency rule.
Eligibility, according to the same page, as checked on October 28, 2026:
- Campaign type: Search campaigns.
- Placement: all ad positions on Google.com, on all supported devices.
- Markets and language: the US, UK, Australia and India, in English.
- Verticals: all advertisers except sensitive categories, with pharmaceuticals named as an example.
The help page carries no publication date. PPC News Feed first reported it on October 24, 2026, and PPC Land published a detailed reading the next day. Confirm eligibility in your own account, since rollouts of this kind rarely reach every account at once.
How review summaries differ from seller ratings
Review summaries and seller ratings both draw on reviews, but they are different features with different controls.
| Seller ratings | Review summaries |
|---|---|---|
What shows | A star rating with review information | AI-written text that condenses positive review themes |
Documented as | An account-level automated asset | Its own help page |
Advertiser control | Can be turned off in account-level automated asset settings | No opt-out described |
Editable | No | No |
Tone | Reflects the rating, high or low | Positive only |
Google's account-level automated assets page lists seller ratings among the assets you can switch off. Review summaries appear there only as a related link, and the page does not say whether the same controls apply. If you need to block review summaries, check your account-level automated asset settings first, then ask your Google representative. Do not assume a setting exists until you see it.
When review summaries matter commercially
Review summaries matter most where reviews already shape the buying decision: local services, ecommerce with high consideration, software and travel. In those categories, a line about fast delivery or helpful support can carry more weight than your own headline.
ConversionNest's view: treat your review profile as ad creative you do not write. If customers praise something your ads ignore, Google may now surface it anyway. If your ads promise something reviewers never mention, the gap becomes visible on the same results page.
Consider a hypothetical furniture retailer whose ads lead on price, while most reviews praise quick, careful delivery. A summary built from those reviews would push delivery into the ad. That is useful only if the landing page also leads with delivery terms. If it does not, the click arrives expecting one thing and finds another, which is the kind of leak our guide to product page views without add to cart helps you diagnose.
Common misconceptions about review summaries
"Google only shows them if they help, so they must work"
Google says it shows summaries when it predicts they will improve ad performance, but the help page does not define which metric it predicts. A higher click-through rate is a performance signal for Google; it may not be a gain in qualified orders or margin for you.
"Review summaries are a new name for seller ratings"
Review summaries are a separate feature with their own documentation, and the help page does not place them under the automated assets that seller ratings belong to.
"You can measure the effect in Google Ads"
The help page mentions no reporting for review summaries. Any read on their effect is indirect.
How to get a directional read without reporting
This is ConversionNest analysis, not Google guidance. Because review summaries only run in four markets, you can compare eligible and ineligible markets before and after the rollout reached your account. Look at click-through rate, conversion rate and cost per qualified conversion in the US, UK, Australia and India against your other English-language markets.
Treat the result as directional. Seasonality, auction changes and other automated assets move at the same time, so a shift does not prove that review summaries caused it. For decisions that move real budget, use a proper test, as in our guide to Google Ads Conversion Lift.
What to check this week
- Your review base: read your recent reviews on the main platforms in your market and note the themes Google is likely to pick up.
- Landing pages: make sure the strengths reviewers mention are visible on the pages your ads point to.
- Automated asset settings: review what is switched on at account level, as you would for automated promotions.
- Regulated claims: if you advertise in a sensitive area that Google may not treat as excluded, ask your Google representative how summaries are reviewed.
- Baseline: record CTR and conversion rate by market now, so you have a comparison point later.
