Meta's new brand ads: what growth teams should test
Meta's new premium placements and attention metric warrant selective testing, not automatic budget reallocation.

On October 15, 2026, Meta announced four brand advertising and measurement developments: Ads Super Burst, First Impression Ads, expanded Reels Trending Ads and Aggregated View Time. They offer different ways to reserve reach, appear alongside relevant content and understand repeated attention. For growth leaders, the real decision is whether any new option creates enough incremental business value to justify its cost.
Access varies. Ads Super Burst is rolling out, First Impression Ads remains a limited US test, and Aggregated View Time is in alpha as of October 16. Do not assume these products are available in every advertising account.
What changed in Meta's brand advertising products?
The changes were announced at Meta's Brand Building Summit on October 15. Search Engine Land's announcement report, AdExchanger's interview with a Meta executive and Mediaweek's summit coverage establish the announced product definitions and rollout status.
Ads Super Burst: book a moment, not a long campaign
Ads Super Burst lets brands reserve concentrated advertising delivery in a window lasting three to 24 hours. Meta positions it for product launches, event sponsorships and important seasonal moments. Category exclusivity may be available for selected reservations.
Through Meta Reach Planner, advertisers can review reach and pricing before booking. In early testing, Meta reported a median 2.9-point lift in ad recall and median reach of about 34 million people per flight. Those are Meta-reported early results, not expected outcomes for a different advertiser.
Availability: A phased rollout toward general availability during October 2026. Check the precise market, inventory and booking conditions in your account.
First Impression Ads: a premium opening position
First Impression Ads offer the opportunity to reserve the first advertisement a person encounters when opening Facebook Feed. The early US test is limited to one advertiser per day.
The placement could be useful for a high-profile launch, but premium positioning does not independently demonstrate higher conversion value. Advertisers must compare the reservation premium with alternatives and define a measurable objective before buying.
Availability: Restricted US testing as of October 16, 2026.
Reels Trending Ads: appear after culturally relevant content
Reels Trending Ads appear near popular Reels content on Facebook and Instagram. Meta expanded its standard topics to 15 always-on categories, with additional seasonal options. The announcements also describe further audience controls planned for later in 2026.
Context may help a brand appear in a relevant cultural moment, but viewers' interest in a popular Reel does not guarantee interest in an advertiser's offer.
Availability: Reels Trending Ads were already available more broadly, but new topic categories and controls require account-level confirmation.
Aggregated View Time: attention accumulated across exposures
Aggregated View Time is Meta's experimental measure of the total time a person spends viewing a brand over multiple exposures during a week. It reflects the reality that short video encounters may accumulate across several days rather than arriving in one continuous viewing session.
EMARKETER's October 15 assessment describes the concept and early access status. Meta shared internal research comparing cumulative and continuous attention, but such findings should not be extrapolated into universal sales forecasts.
Availability: Alpha testing as of October 16, 2026.
What does Aggregated View Time add to existing measurement?
Traditional video reporting often emphasises views, view duration and completion within individual impressions. Aggregated View Time instead considers repeated brief exposures to the same brand.
Consider a hypothetical viewer who spends two seconds with a brand's video on Monday, one second on Wednesday and two seconds on Friday. The total is five seconds across the week. A metric based only on individual sessions does not communicate that combined amount as directly.
This can improve the description of audience exposure, but it does not establish whether the exposure created additional revenue. A viewer who repeatedly watches may already have stronger interest in the category.
ConversionNest's view: attention can be diagnostically useful, but budget increases should be justified with evidence about business outcomes.
Separate delivery, attention and incremental value
Use three distinct reporting layers instead of blending them into one headline number.
- Delivery: Reach, impressions, frequency and CPM describe media distribution and its cost.
- Attention and brand response: Viewing time, ad recall and consideration describe exposure or changes in brand perception.
- Commercial impact: Incremental purchases, qualified leads, new customers and contribution profit describe business value.
A rise in attention should not be reported as an equivalent rise in customer acquisition. Likewise, a campaign can have modest viewing time yet generate valuable response.
The appropriate primary measure depends on the objective established before the campaign begins. For a launch designed to build awareness, lift in awareness among relevant buyers may be useful. For a campaign intended to generate profitable sales, incremental margin is more decisive.
Which product should a growth leader consider?
Ads Super Burst: when timing matters
A concentrated reservation may make sense when a launch or cultural event creates a narrow window in which reach has exceptional value.
Ask whether the target audience will be present, how the cost compares with auction delivery and what exposure is contractually guaranteed. Check the opportunity cost of removing money from existing channels.
A large reach estimate has little value if the incremental audience is commercially irrelevant.
First Impression Ads: when prominence is the objective
A premium Feed position could serve a high-profile brand moment, but its current US test means access is the first constraint. If the product becomes available, request the pricing and forecast against the best realistic alternative.
Do not present early placement visibility as evidence of incremental sales.
Reels Trending Ads: when creative and context align
This option may be suitable when a product naturally relates to the surrounding topic and the creative works in short-form video. Review content suitability and whether targeting settings produce relevant reach.
Success should be assessed beyond engagement with adjacent Reels. The advertisement itself must deliver useful brand or commercial outcomes.
Aggregated View Time: when the measurement question justifies it
If an eligible test becomes possible, evaluate whether repeated brief video exposure provides a better explanation of subsequent brand response than individual-session watch metrics.
Keep view time as a supporting metric until its incremental contribution is demonstrated.
A hypothetical €100,000 campaign decision
Imagine a hypothetical ecommerce retailer with €100,000 available for a seasonal campaign. Management proposes reserving €20,000 for Meta brand inventory, funded by reducing established acquisition activity.

Before agreeing, the growth team needs to estimate the marginal contribution that the displaced €20,000 might generate. Historical average ROAS alone is not the right comparison because returns may diminish as spending rises.
Next, define the reservation's intended result. Does the brand need more awareness in a relevant audience? Does it need stronger consideration during a launch? Or is its main problem weak onsite conversion?
If checkout performance is the real constraint, premium brand reach could be a poor near-term investment.
Finally, specify how performance will be measured. A rise in searches and sales during launch week might reflect PR, seasonal demand or concurrent campaigns. Where practical, use a suitable randomised holdout, lift test or another defensible causal design.

How should advertisers test cumulative attention?
Aggregated View Time is still in alpha, so the following is a conceptual testing plan, not a generally available setup procedure.
Start with a causal question
One possible hypothesis is that repeated brief exposures produce greater incremental brand awareness than an alternative creative or delivery approach with similar cost and reach.
The target outcome must be chosen first. Incremental recall or consideration may be appropriate for brand activity. Incremental customer value is more relevant for acquisition investment decisions.
Avoid selecting groups based on observed watch time
People who watch more video may differ from those who watch less before the campaign. Comparing those groups does not create a randomised experiment.
Where technically feasible, assign comparable audiences independently of their likely response. Document the sample size, study duration and decision threshold in advance.
Establish guardrails
Track frequency, reach, costs and audience saturation alongside the primary outcome. Stop or redesign a test if delivery deviates materially from its intended design or the measurement is unreliable.
A higher attention score is insufficient if the required spend exceeds its likely commercial benefit.
What to do now
Treat the four announcements as different opportunities, each with different restrictions.
For Ads Super Burst, explore availability and reservation economics only when your business has a genuinely time-sensitive moment. For First Impression Ads, monitor the US test rather than planning an assumed global launch. For Reels Trending Ads, assess contextual fit and account-specific settings. For Aggregated View Time, wait for access and build a measurement hypothesis before pursuing it.
Meta's early study results provide useful research leads, but they do not establish what another advertiser will earn. The decision to spend more should reflect marginal customer value, opportunity cost and defensible evidence of incrementality.
Frequently asked questions
What is Meta Ads Super Burst?
Ads Super Burst is a reservation-based product that lets advertisers concentrate brand advertising reach within a three- to 24-hour window. Availability is being expanded in phases, and category exclusivity may be offered for selected bookings.
Are Meta First Impression Ads available globally?
No global availability is confirmed as of October 16, 2026. Meta is testing the first-ad Facebook Feed placement in the United States, with restricted advertiser participation.
What are Reels Trending Ads?
Reels Trending Ads place advertising near highly viewed, culturally relevant Reels on Facebook and Instagram. Meta announced expanded topic choices in October 2026.
What does Aggregated View Time measure?
Aggregated View Time is an experimental metric that combines the time someone spends with a brand across multiple video encounters in a week. The product remains in alpha testing.
Does greater attention prove incremental ROAS?
No. Attention describes exposure, while incremental ROAS requires evidence that advertising caused additional conversion value. Observed watch time alone cannot establish that causal relationship.
